  2.     If one looks at the 
  3. illustration with the aid of a 
  4. magnifying glass, one will see 
  5. that the two patterns are almost 
  6. identical. But there is a 
  7. difference. The dots in the 
  8. center of the right-hand 
  9. pattern, inside the region of 
  10. the "triangle," are shifted a bit 
  11. to the left in relation to those 
  12. in the left-hand pattern. On an 
  13. almost microscopic scale, the 
  14. necessary disparity between 
  15. left and right is indeed present. 
  16. The Julesz discovery shows, 
  17. then, that the perceptual 
  18. system can simultaneously 
  19. process many minute 
  20. differences between two 
  21. retinal images and that in so 
  22. doing it can construct an 
  23. overall pattern or shape.
